Motherhood is a magical time in a woman’s life, but the road towards it can be bumpy. Are you a first-time mom still learning how to navigate this entirely new experience? Or do you need a refresher on what to expect when you’re expecting? Here are some tips to guide you through the journey towards finally meeting your little bundle of joy.
But first, what are the most common signs of pregnancy? You have a bun in your oven if you:
Missed a menstrual period
Experience hormonal changes like tender and swollen breasts
Experience morning sickness or nausea with/without vomiting
Urinate more often
Usually moody, bloated, and fatigued
Are averse to certain food types
Experience constipation, cramping, spotting, and nasal congestion
These are the early signs of pregnancy, but make sure to take a pregnancy test or consult a specialist if you missed a period just to be sure. If you're finally sure that you're going to be a soon-to-be mom, what should you do (and NOT do)?
Do:
Take multivitamins or prenatal vitamins rich in folic acid, calcium, iron and Vitamin D
Get lots of sleep and stay active
Be mindful of what you eat and consult a doctor for food to avoid
Monitor your baby’s movements
Sleep on your side during your third trimester to avoid stillbirth
Always carry your pregnancy or antenatal notes containing your medical history
Don’t:
Smoke and drink alcohol: smoking increases risks of low birth weight while drinking could result in Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)!
Drink too much caffeine: this could increase your baby’s heart rate!
Be around toxic chemicals like paint as well as cat waste which has harmful parasites like Toxoplasma gondii
Wear stilettos and sit or stand for too long
Be rash in planning long-distance travel
