The summer has brought with it high temperatures throughout the days. The heat is not only uncomfortable, but can also be a major health threat. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), high heat and humidity can make you sick, because your body can't compensate for it and properly cool you off. Heat-related illnesses include dehydration, respiratory disease, heat cramps and rash, heatstroke and even kidney damage. However, these illnesses are very much preventable!

Follow these tips to fully enjoy the summer season while keeping yourself and your family safe!

  1. Stay cool. Stay in an air-conditioned location as much as possible. If you are outdoors, take breaks from the heat. Take cool showers or baths to cool down.
  2. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine to prevent dehydration.
  3. Stay protected. This includes not skipping your sunscreen. Sunscreens can prevent sunburns and skin cancer. Wear loose, lightweight and light-colored clothing as much as possible.
  4. Stay alert. Watch for signs of Heat Stress, which include muscle pains and cramps; heavy sweating, dizziness, or nausea; high body temperature with dry skin; and rapid pulse.

By following these tips, you can still enjoy your summer while staying safe under the sun!
