Type 2 diabetes is a long-term medical condition in which your body does not use insulin properly. This results in unusual blood sugar levels. Considered as a “lifestyle disease,” one of the causes of Type 2 diabetes is our way of living – the food we eat, how frequently we engage in physical activity, etc.
The good news is that type 2 diabetes is largely preventable. Here are simple steps to lowering your diabetes risk.
1. Control your weight. Excess weight is the single most important cause of diabetes. Obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are the biggest diabetes risk factors. Lose the extra weight by making changes in your daily diet and by exercising.
2. Be more physically active. It is no secret that exercise presents a number of benefits to our bodies. Exercise helps you to lose weight and lower your blood sugar levels. Even a simple brisk walk around the neighborhood can do wonders to your health.
3. Follow a healthy eating plan. Reduce the amount of calories you eat and drink each day. This will help in losing and keep off the extra weight. Add whole grain products in your diet and eat a hearty amount of vegetables. Avoid sugar and fats as much as possible. Limit your intake of alcohol. You may consult with a nutritionist to help fine-tune your diet.
4. Don’t smoke. Smoking can contribute to insulin resistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes. It has also been observed that after smoking, our blood sugar levels increase. If you’re already a smoker, try to quit as early as possible.
5. Get screened. It is recommended to get screened for diabetes starting at the age of 35. Consult with a family doctor or an Endocrinologist to be guided on how to prevent diabetes, especially if you have a family history of the disease.
Remember that type 2 diabetes, along with a number of diseases, is preventable. Keep a healthy weight, eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly and avoid smoking. Talk to your doctor to see whether there is anything else you can do to delay or to prevent type 2 diabetes.
