It’s officially the rainy season, and with it cooler temperatures. Despite the relief the drop in temperature brings, we should be aware that this also makes us prone to catching the flu and colds. The common cold and the flu (influenza) are respiratory illnesses caused by different viruses. Both also share similar symptoms, like runny nose, cough, sore throat, fever, and headache.
Follow these ways to help prevent the spread of colds and the flu.
Eat right and have enough sleep. Eating a balanced diet helps strengthen your immune system, while engaging in physical activities such as exercising boosts your immune system and speeds recovery from illness.
Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands with soap and warm water to help protect you from germs. Washing your hands before eating and/or touching your face is an important way to prevent the spread of harmful viruses and bacteria. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Avoid contact with people who are already sick. Keep your distance from people who are coughing, sneezing, or showing any signs of sickness, especially from airborne diseases. Likewise, if you are sick and contagious, stay at home and recover.
Stay hydrated. It is common knowledge that drinking plenty of fluids is one of the keys to a healthier lifestyle. Staying hydrated flushes toxins out of your system, and lets your body circulate blood more freely, allowing white blood cells better fight off viruses.
Get vaccinated. The flu vaccine is your best protection against flu viruses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone age 6 months or older. Check with your physician or family doctor about getting a flu shot this year.
