FUNCTION
The Department of Medicine shares and supports the vision of the World s Medical Center. Our commitment is to be the primary choice healthcare providers in our community, to be professional and compassionate Internists and to be competent mentors of our Resident doctors.
The Department of Medicine functions as an organized staff of Board Certified Internists as well as Board Certified Subspecialists in all fields of Internal Medicine who work hand in hand with Hospital management to provide healthcare to our patients. We enhance the staff and residents' professional growth by continuing medical education through attendance in local and international conferences as well as our own regular conferences, Research paper presentations and involvement with local and international specialty organizations.
The Department is able to able to function in the diagnosis and medical management of adult diseases with the support of hospital facilities that serve different sections of Internal Medicine. These are the Cardiovascular Unit (Diagnostic and Wellness) Pulmonary Lab, Hemodialysis, Gatroenterology Endoscopy Unit, Oncology and the Medical Intensive Care Unit.
The Department also functions to serve the community. We hold regular outreach medical service in our nearby under -served areas. There is also a provision in our Center for service patients who may be admitted free of Doctor's professional fees and discounted hospital charges.
One of our core values is the transfer of learning through lectures, conferences and research between the Consultant staff and Residents. The supervision and evaluation of Resident doctors is done through a structured training program. We have adopted the Internal Medicine- Residency Training Program of the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) which has accredited the Department's training Program in 2004 and 2008.
We continue to further develop our knowledge and skills in an environment of ethical standards, respect and cooperation as our commitment to serve our patients better.
SERVICES
PULMONARY SECTION AND LABORATORY
The pulmonary laboratory is adequately equipped with basic and updated equipments in detecting and confirming respiratory tract as well as primary and secondary lung diseases not only in symptomatic patients but also those asymptomatic but who are at risk of acquiring them. It is supplied with basic equipments and devices for the care and management of primary acute and chronic pulmonary diseases but also when the bronchopulmonary system are secondarily affected or involved due to extrapulmonary and systemic diseases.
Patients complaining of difficulty in breathing, prolonged cough, hemoptysis, clubbing of fingers, abnormal respiratory rate, pre-operative clearance, abnormal chest x-ray findings, abnormal arterial blood gas and abnormal pulmonary function test are referred to our Pulmonologist for diagnosis and management. Diagnosed broncho-pulmonary diseases are also referred to these specialists for optimal management.
The procedures performed by our Pulmonologists for further evaluation and/or management are: diagnostic and therapeutic thoracentesis, chemical pleurodesis, mechanical ventilation management and weaning from mechanical ventilation.
The diagnostic modalities offered by our laboratory unit are: Spirometry with pre and post bronchodilator challenge. Arterial Blood Gas Analysis, peak expiratory flow rate determination, Wright's respirometer for maximum inspiratory force determination and pulse oximeter for non-invasive blood oxygen saturation determination.
The therapeutic modalities offered by our service are: Nebulization treatment, BiPAP, adult and pediatric mechanical ventilation, intermittent mechanical ventilation, CPAP, Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing, chest physical therapy manually and use of percussor, set up for weaning from mechanical and incentive spirometry.

CARDIOLOGY SECTION AND CARDIOVASCULAR LABORATORY
The Cardiovascular Laboratory is equipped with sophisticated, updated, state-of-the-art diagnostic equipments for detecting and confirming heart dysfunctions and diseases as well as vascular abnormalities that are helpful for physicians I diagnosing and treating their patients.
Patients experiencing exertional chest pain, palpitation, easy fatigability, dyspnea on lying position, irregular rhythm, abnormal heart rate and heart sounds, hypertension, pre-operative clearance, abnormal findings in electrocardiogram(ECG) and other cardiovascular tests are referred to these specialists for diagnosis and subsequent management. Diagnosed cardiac and vascular diseases are also referred to them for optimal management.
The procedures performed by our Cardiologists are: non-invasive and invasive procedures in evaluating and monitoring patients especially for critically-ill patients and intra-operative cardiac monitoring.
The diagnostic procedures and tests offered by the Cardiovascular Laboratory are: Electrocardiogram (ECG), Threadmill Stress Test, Exercise Stress Echocardiography, 2-dimensional Echocardiography with Doppler studies, Stress echocardiography, Dobutamine stress echocardiography, Carotid duplex scan, Venous duplex scan and Arterial-venous Duplex scan.

GASTROENTEROLOGY SECTION
The diagnostic procedures offered by this section are: Esophagogastroduo-denoscopy (EGD), Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) Tube insertion, H pylori test, Proctosigmoidoscopy, Colonoscopy, Abdominal Paracentesis and Liver Biopsy.
Patients complaining of difficulty and pain in swallowing, abnormal pain and distension, vomiting, abnormal bowel movement, malabsorption, icterisia, hematemesis, hematochesia, ascites, abdominal masses, and abnormal results of liver function tests (SGPT, SGOT, Alkaline phosphatase, serum albumin, prothrombin time, bilirubin), serum amylase and lipase, abnormal results in stool examination, blood urea nitrogen, scout film of the abdomen, barium enema, upper gastrointestinal series and other gastrointestinal tract and hepatobiliary tract work-ups are referred to these specialists for diagnosis, further investigation, and optimal management. In addition, diagnosed gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases are referred to them for further management.

NEPHROLOGY SECTION AND HEMODIALYSIS UNIT
The Hemodialysis Unit which the Section of Nephrology offers is a Department of Health accredited facility is equipped with the basic requirements for one of the management of acute and chronic renal failure patients who need hemodialysis whether in-patient or out-patient setting.
The other services which this section can offer are consultations and referrals for the diagnosis and management of patients suffering from dysuria, abnormal urine output, flank or low back pains, scrotal pain, abnormal results of urinalysis, serum creatinine, and blood uric acid, electrolyte imbalance, abnormal results of KUB-IVP, and abnormal ultrasound of the kidneys, urinary tract, urinary bladder, and prostate gland. Likewise, patients diagnosed with renal and urinary tract diseases are referred to these group of specialists for further investigation and optimal management.
INFECTIOUS DISEASE SECTION
The services that our Infectious Disease Specialists can offer are consultations for the diagnosis and management of persisitent fever despite initial management, generalized body malaise and body aches as well as skin rashes that are suggestive of infectious diseases and lymphadenitis. In addition, our specialists can be relied on optimal patient care for diagnosed infectious Diseases whether in and out-patient basis.
HEMATOLOGY SECTION AND HOPE CENTER
HOPE Center is a specialized unit, designed for Adult and Pediatric patients who are diagnosed to have cancer. It is manned by one chairman of the unit, with all the best Hematologist and Oncologist, with three efficient oncology nurses, who can cater the needs of patients coming from all the provinces and even outside of the country. It is equipped with advanced facilities that can compete with other institutions.
Our Hematologists can offer their expertise in the diagnosis for the cause/s of anemia and other abnormal blood cells that are usually detected in routine complete blood count as well as optimal management of diagnosed hematologic diseases. The specialists are equipped with instruments for further hematologic investigations like bone marrow aspiration and biopsy and immediate assessment of peripheral blood smears for optimal patients care. Other procedures and treatment modalities that they can offer are phlebotomy and chemotherapy for hematologic malignancies.
ONCOLOGY SECTION AND HOPE CENTER
Our expert Oncologists can address the optimal assessment and diagnosis of patients complaining of weight loss, lumps, and masses as well as the best and cost-effective management of diagnosed malignant conditions in adults. They perform chemotherapy in in-patient and out-patient setting at the HOPE center equipped with advance facilities.
ENDOCRINOLOGY SECTION
Patients complaining of unexplained weight loss & weight gain, abnormal results of Blood Sugar levels, lipid profile (Cholesterol and Triglycerides), Thyroid function test (TSH, FT3, FT4) and abnormal results of thyroid studies (thyroid scan) and other tests for the body metabolism or diagnosed endocrinologic diseases including management of overweight and obesity are referred to these competent specialists for optimal assessment and management.
NEUROLOGY SECTION
Our competent and credible Neurologists can be referred for your patients experiencing recurrent and progressive headache, back pain along the vertebral area, dizziness and vertigo, visual loss, syncope, paralysis, unilateral weakness of the face and extremities, movement disorders alterations in consciousness like, confusion, stupor and coma, abnormal results of CT scan of MRI of the central nervous system, abnormal electro-
Encephalogram, electromyelography (EMG), nerve conduction velocity (NCV) and other tests for CNS and PNS evaluation, for proper further evaluation, diagnosis and management. They likewise perform lumbar puncture as additional tool for further evaluation and diagnosis of patients who consult them when indicated.
DERMATOLOGY SECTION
Our doctors in the field of Dermatology are the best choice for consultation for expert opinion regarding diagnosis of skin and mucosal abnormalities and proper treatment of diagnosed skin disorders whether in and out-patient settings. They perform skin biopsies for definitive diagnosis when indicated and do excision or electrocauterization of skin problems.
